Pempek - Heavenly Food from Indonesia

One of activity that you should put on your traveling itinerary as "a must" when you visit Indonesia is doing culinary adventure. Yep, besides having unique and exotic culture (such as Pendet Dance from Bali, Barong Dance from East Java, Angklung music instrument from West Java, Batik Cloth & Wayang / Paper Puppet from Central Java, Songket cloth from South Sumatera, etc), Indonesia also well-known as the heaven of exotic and delicious food.

Each place has its own special food you could try. But one that you should aware is Pempek. Why? Because it's extremely tasty that won't let you stop to keep eating it. Hmm.... how come?

Pempek is a food made from Spanish-mackarel fish and sogu palm. There are a lot of types of pempek : curly type (called Pempek keriting), long type (Lenjer), skinfish (Pempek Kulit), or round type (Bulat). All of them are plain type. But if you want something with fill-in type, you can try Sub-Marine (Kapal Selam). Wow.... whatta food...!!! Don't get wrong. Even it called Sub-Marine, but it does not mean it made from solid-steel. It is same as other pempek but have egg fill in it. But why it called Sub-Marine. Frankly I have no idea. But I believe it because the appearance of this type which similar as a submarine (well... sort of. Just try to imagine a big-extreme fat-submarine.... see...??).

There are several ways to serve and eat it. Usually it boiled, then eaten while hot directly. But if don't feel comfortable to eat it (maybe still afraid there has putrid odor from the fish), you can fried it before eat it. If you want add exotic sensation, try to dip it with Cuko - the mixture of garlic, sour water, and chilli. It makes Pempek tastes hot, sour, sweet, and delicious. If you want to taste it more exotic, try to add some small slices of cucumber, noodles, and some scrape of dried shrimps. Believe me.... it tastes marvelous...!!!

Recently, there are more variations of fill-in Pempek which make the taste more unique. Some people change the egg into sausage, meat ball, shrimp, crab, or even cheese. It tastes much more like the combination of Europe and our traditional aroma. Some people from abroad feel it tastes more close to their tongue and can enjoy it better.

So one day, when you plan to visit Indonesia, look for Pempek. It sells a lot in every big city in Indonesia. But if you look for the original, try to visit Palembang, one of the well-known metropolitan city which located in South Sumatera (in Sumatera Island). Pempek is one of the most popular traditional food from that place. There are a lot of versions of Pempek which can meet to your taste.

Try this heavenly food from Indonesia. You never step to Indonesia until you get one of them....
